How much to leave depends entirely on where you are. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is normal in a restaurant. In much of Europe rounding up or leaving 5 to 10 percent is plenty, and in Japan tipping is not expected at all and can cause confusion.

How much should I tip?
It depends where you are. In the United States, 15 to 20 percent is usual in a restaurant, and 20 percent is common for good service.
In much of Europe, service is often included and 5 to 10 percent or simply rounding up is normal. In Japan and South Korea, tipping is not expected.
How do I work out 15% of a bill?
Tap the 15% button, or type 15 into the percentage box.
In your head: take 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then add half of that again. For a bill of 50, that is 5 plus 2.50, so 7.50.
The bill already has a service charge. Should I still tip?
Usually not. A service charge is a tip that has already been added, so tipping again means paying for service twice — which is easy to do without noticing, and common in the United Kingdom, Europe, India and much of Asia.
Set the service charge question to yes and the calculator will say plainly that anything further is on top of what you have already been charged. If the service was poor, you can normally ask for a discretionary service charge to be removed.
How much should I tip in another country?
The shortcut buttons change to what is customary where you are, and the line underneath says it in words. If we have guessed your country wrongly, or you are travelling, you can pick another one.
Broadly: 15 to 20 percent in the United States and Canada, 10 to 15 in the United Kingdom, 5 to 10 across much of Europe where service is often included, 5 to 10 in India, and nothing at all in Japan, Korea or China, where tipping is not expected and can cause confusion.
Do I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Most people tip on the amount before tax, but tipping on the total is also common and the difference is usually small.
