Everyone pays the same amount here. If people owe different amounts because they ordered different things, add up each person's items separately instead.
It works for more than restaurant bills
The same sum splits rent between housemates, a taxi between passengers, a group present, or a shared shopping trip. Anything one person paid for that several people owe a share of.

How do I split a bill between people?
Put the total in the first box and the number of people in the second. If you are tipping, add the percentage and it will be shared too.
The share does not divide evenly. Who pays the extra penny?
Splitting 100 between 3 gives 33.33 each, which only adds up to 99.99. Somebody has to cover the last penny.
The usual answer is that whoever is paying the bill covers it, or one person rounds up. It is rarely worth more thought than that.
Can I use this to split rent?
Yes, as long as everyone pays the same. Put the monthly rent in and the number of housemates, and leave the tip box empty.
If someone pays more for a bigger room, this will not do that — work out each person's share separately.
How do I split rent with a couple in the house?
Be aware of what this calculator does first: it divides a total evenly, so it works when everybody pays the same share. A couple sharing one room is the common case where they do not.
There are two fair answers and the household has to pick one. Splitting per person means a couple pays two shares — rent of 1500 between three people, two of them a couple, is 500 each, so the couple pays 1000. Splitting per room means the couple pays one share of three, so 500 between them and 500 each for the others.
Per room is the usual choice when the couple has the same amount of space as everyone else, and per person when they are using more of the shared bills. Once you have decided, put the rent in and the number of shares — not the number of people — into the second box.
Should I add the tip before or after splitting?
It makes no difference to the answer. Adding the tip first and then dividing gives exactly the same result as dividing first and each person tipping their share. We add it first because it is easier to check.
