Working out what you need on the last exam
If you have one exam left, this finds the lowest score that still gets you the overall grade you want. Tell us the grade you need, the grade you have so far, and how much the last exam counts towards the final result.
That last number is the one people are least sure of. It is usually written in the course outline or syllabus — an exam worth 40 percent of the module means you type 40.
Three answers are possible
Usually you get a score to aim for. Sometimes you find you are already safe, because even scoring zero would leave you above your target.
And sometimes the honest answer is that this exam cannot get you there, even with a perfect score. We say so plainly rather than showing a number above 100, so you can go and ask what else counts.

Where do I find how much the exam counts?
It is normally in the course outline, syllabus or module handbook. Look for a breakdown like coursework 60 percent, final exam 40 percent.
If you cannot find it, ask your teacher or lecturer. It is the number that changes the answer most.
What if it says the grade is not possible?
It means even a perfect score on this exam would leave you short. That is worth knowing early rather than late.
Ask whether anything else counts towards the final result, such as resits, extra credit or coursework still to be marked.
Does this work for a college class as well as school?
Yes. The sum is the same wherever you are studying, as long as you know your target, your current grade and how much the final piece is worth.
